Nix Seeks Second Term To Continue Serving Constituents
While we have accomplished many good things in my first term, there is more to do. We passed legislation to establish a trauma system in Arkansas, increased funding for ARKids first, and increased funding for senior citizens and community health clinics. We took another cent off the sales tax on food and passed laws to protect Arkansans on our highways.
My transportation committee was instrumental in getting bills passed that became law such as banning texting while driving at any age and the graduated license for teens. A bill I introduced through this committee that became law provides safe transportation of railroad employees to and from their work sites. Two bills I introduced were to increase the look back period for repeat DWI offenders and to provide a fair hearing for educational support staff in schools. Both bills did not quite make it through the process and I plan to bring them back in the next session. I am working with city officials on another bill that provides transparency in reporting from special improvement districts. I also plan to stay involved with the lottery in making sure the funds are used to further the education of Arkansas students as promised. This first session has been an intensive learning experience – learning the process of getting a bill introduced and taken through the legislative process, establishing key contacts with state agencies, constituency services, staff, and legislative research, and establishing a good working relationship with fellow legislators. I received awards and recognition which included recognition from the Arkansas Municipal League from assisting cities and towns with key legislation affecting municipalities, from MADD as one of 13 legislators recognized as a community champion for sponsoring legislation to promote public safety, from the Police Benevolent Association, and from the Hunger Relief Alliance for assisting with programs that resulted in funds going to CJCOHN. |
